The Sculpture Track, initially founded in 1993 and then directed by David Zundelovitch until 2014, is the Basis School’s oldest study track. Its current director is Ya'acov Dorchin – recipient of the Israel Prize for visual arts.
taught in the unique Basis approach, constitutes the fourth and final pillar establishing the path for young sculptors.
Basis – A Knowledge Expanding Foundation Aimed at helping students make the most of this curriculum, the Basis School has developed a unique academic program designed to broaden horizons by integrating the study tracks of all departments. This activity
Basis- A Multi Dimensional Foundation In addition to sculpture classes, students attend a range of complementary classes designed to expand their professional knowledge. Their curriculum includes a constructivist drawing class teaching 3-dimensional, geometric, and organic drawing, a skill required in sculpture for sketching ideas for personal use and presentation. An analytical composition class develops spatial visualization and analysis of work component relations. Classes in poetry, music, digital thinking, and others expand understanding of the core concepts relevant to all plastic art mediums and other art forms. An art history class,
Basis- A Sculptural Foundation The foundations of sculpture are taught in the first two years of the program in two concurrent classes by different teachers of varying approaches, and in several technological courses that provide a basic understanding of materials and techniques: woodworking, metalworking, ceramics, wax, stone, and geometric sculpture. One class develops spatial awareness, understanding the relations between content, materials, and form, composition, context, and combinations, while the technical courses focus on familiarity with materials, and experimenting with traditional and contemporary techniques.
references materials taught in all tracks, connecting between them and establishing their association with other worlds of content, both immediate and far-flung. Sculpture Track students also study Painting Foundations and Photography Foundations, broadening their understanding of multidisciplinary art works and developing an open approach between the various art fields.
Basis– Building a Foundation to Your Future In the latter years of the program, students are encouraged to make personal curriculum choices, depending on their desires and art path, with the support and counsel of faculty.
Classes are taught by leading and accomplished artists and lecturers, and conducted in the new Basis building which provides students with one of the most advanced study environments in the art field.
The Basis Sculpture Track is unique in its approach to sculpture as a profession that is founded on four basic principles: spatial practice, study of materials, process proficiency, and a broad knowledge of art history. The first three of these art “pillars” can only be attained through increasingly difficult practice and repetition and therefore cannot be shortened or condensed. This is why Basis emphasizes practical workshops for slow and methodical study that allow for experimentation, research, and analysis.
