Merav Shinn Ben-Alon
70
The point of departure of the 70 display is a video work by the same name created by Merav Shinn Ben-Alon in the course of last year. It is shown alongside works by Tamar Getter, David Ginton, Haim Maor, Tamara Masel, Michal Na'aman, Efrat Natan, Nahum Tevet, and Yocheved Weinfeld, which, among others, informed the creation of the video.
The video work consists of edited sequences of pen drawings. The delayed transitions from one image to another capture a "third image," as it were, in an intermediary phase. The drawings in the video are based mostly on iconic works from the 1970s, a decade known for the conceptual and political-social disposition of a considerable part of its art.
By drawing and editing images from these and other works, Shinn Ben-Alon proposes tentative reinterpretation and rereading of the then current gender and trauma narratives in light of the contemporary discourse that has changed since the 1970s.
Merav Shinn Ben-Alon wrote her Master's degree thesis (2013) at Tel Aviv University on Israeli art of the 1970s. Her 2015 solo exhibition at Ha'Kibbutz Israeli Art Gallery was based on her research work. In that exhibition, she referenced a historic exhibition shown at the same gallery in the 1970s and then reconstructed by curator Tali Tamir in the 1990s.
